POW#1: Calgary Winter Skyline

POW#1: Calgary Winter Skyline

The first ever Picture of the Week! Behold its panoramic glory and despair! Wait, no, that's not the right word. Glory and misery? No, damn it, I am bad at this. Eh, whatever. It was cold on this particular day. Cold and windy. And so it was that I decided to stand on the bank of the river and take pictures. And Picture of the Week was born. Where will it go from here? Only time will tell.

POW#2: Storm Down the Tracks

POW#2: Storm Down the Tracks

Took this one whilst out for a wander some time back, but never had anything to do with it. But that's sort of the reason POW came around. A whole album of photos with no real home. The stuff that can't be categorized, given a category. And that category is "whatever." It's kinda like scraping the crumbs out of the microwave. And then eating it. What's what POW is all about.

Deliciousness.

POW#3: Where Are We?

POW#3: Where Are We?

I bet I'm over there somewhere. Wait, no, that doesn't make a lick of sense. I can't be over there, but lost here. Maybe I'm over... here? But then, if I'm here, how am I lost? Whatever, just follow the arrow and you'll be fine!

...why is the arrow spinning?

POW#4: Super Green

POW#4: Super Green

LOOK HOW GREEN THIS IS!

I really have nothing else to say on the matter. Except that this is quite possibly the most green photo I have ever taken. Ironically, it takes skill to capture such green. As in, I wasn't green to green.

IT'S SO GREEN!

POW#5: 1132

POW#5: 1132

That's how many buttons I used to work with. And combiinations of buttons would do MORE things. And that's not counting the faders, dials, and toggles. The only thing with more potential combinations is a pizza with unlimited toppings. I mean, it's right there in the name.

POW#6: Harsh Glare

POW#6: Harsh Glare

Trees! Sunlight! Fresh air! The good part of working on your own projects is moments like this, where you get to process shots in a campground a short drive from Gettysburg.

The downside to working outside is LOOK AT THAT GLARE. Your screen is basically just a mirror to make sure the trees behind you aren't up to anything.

POW#7: Ice Drips Up

POW#7: Ice Drips Up

Nature's funky sometimes. Like, why on Earth would a drop of water freeze UP out of the water? Yes, there is a perfectly good explaination for it. But I prefer to stare dumbfounded at how bizarre nature's simplicitis can be sometimes.

POW#8: Baltimore Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse

POW#8: Baltimore Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse

The Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse in Baltimore, Maryland. I must say, of all the old buildings one could live in, a tiny lighthouse off the coast that you can only reach via small boat is pretty high up that list.

POW#9: Shipping On the Road

POW#9: Shipping On the Road

Highway 1 + cloudy weather.  Headed west. What's in the truck? Probably boxes. But the real question is, what's in those boxes? Money? Drugs? Mysterious goods headed for destinations unknown?

Probably pants.

POW#10: Nature is Grand

POW#10: Nature is Grand

A little bit of nature for you this week. From the highest mountain to the deepest canyon.

I mean, except not. It's like an average sized mountain and an equally average sized canyon. But that doesn't have the same ring to it.

"It's neither the highest nor the deepest but it's spectacular all the same."

My point is, every now and then it's easy to forget we don't live in Skyrim.

POW#11: Baltimore Aquarium

POW#11: Baltimore Aquarium

Baltimore has an aquarium. It is a giant glass pyramid, and it is full of fish and turtles. It is literally one of the most amazing buildings imagineable. Because it is, essentially, actually just a giant aquarium. Not a building full of aquriums, it's a giant pyramid full of fish. Some of them are jelly!

POW#12: NG KS TURNING

POW#12: NG KS TURNING

Signs on the back roads serve two purposes, generally. The first is to alert you to the potential for large logging trucks to make wide turns. The other is to helpfully collect shot and .22 rounds. Thank you signs. Your sacrifices will not go unnoticed.

POW#13: Hunting Lodge

POW#13: Hunting Lodge

Grab your pith helmet and a pithy comeback, it's days gone by and we're going on a safari! Unfortunately for you, you have malaria. And probably at least twelve other things. Luckily you for your outfit consists of no less than ten layers of canvas!

Lordy, it is hot out.

POW#14: Snowy Rose

POW#14: Snowy Rose

Actually one of the first shots I took with one of my first cameras, way back when. While out for a walk I noticed the snow weighing heavily on some roses. Like life on my soul. It's like poetry. #wakemeup #myimmortal

POW#15: Sit and Reflect

POW#15: Sit and Reflect

Nature seeks new ways to best itself at every turn. It's not enough to simply have majestic peaks, surrounding a crystal clear lake, under bright blue skies. No. It needs TWO of that, perfectly reflected in said lake. Because nature is a show off.

POW#16: Long I Stood There

POW#16: Long I Stood There

Not more than a short walk from the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe stands this church, a rather spectacularly gothic building that towers over you with nary a concern for your stature. And if Assassin's Creed has taught me anything, there's a viewpoint up there.

POW#17: Skyscraper Ladder

POW#17: Skyscraper Ladder

Eighth Avenue Place features some of my favorite architecture in the city (in terms of "it's just a skyscraper"). The angles, the reflections the buildings cast on each other, and the off kilter shape of them are intriguing. And running up each building is a notch cut into the structure, featuring illumination that creates a delightful ladder to the sky effect.

POW#18: Green & Also Rock

POW#18: Green & Also Rock

It's mostly green, but for a rock. The rock is a commentary on how much of this photograph is not green, while the majority green color of a commentary on how the majority of this photo is green. Any other colors are outliers that are not taken into account. The margin of error for this image is +/- Blue.

POW#19: Cold Sun

POW#19: Cold Sun

If the temperature is just right (i.e. cold enough to freeze your face, but stops at your face without penetrating and freezing your brain) the exhaust from the buildings and the clouds combine with the sunrise to create the perfect tint of orange and damn it all anyway it is cold out.

POW#20: Symbolism

POW#20: Symbolism

I made a pun.

POW#21: D.Anon

POW#21: D.Anon

A test shot from a project I started working on some time back, but ended up setting it aside for a number of reasons. One of these days I do want to revisit it, either in its original form or something new. In the mean time, all I have of it are a series of photo sets and some small mood pieces, as I hesitate to call them "films." I may post them one day.

POW#22: Line in the Rock

POW#22: Line in the Rock

I have this thing for lines. Particularly harsh ones, hence why I gravitate towards taking pictures of buildings at less than orthodox angles. And every now and then, nature puts their hand up and shouts "me too!" And I have no choice but to take a picture, because check out those lines.

POW#23: Ice, Ice, Twiggy

POW#23: Ice, Ice, Twiggy

Can't get much more '90s that that. Or colder. Wait, I mean... I don't even know. Maybe if we get a Hackers reference up in here. At any rate, it's so cold the air around this twig is freezing, and I'm taking a picture with my face exposed. The air hates us.

POW#24: Where Are We? (Still)

POW#24: Where Are We? (Still)

Check the map! Where's the map? I kicked it in the river! That's a movie reference to a film that was released--OH GOD almost two decades ago. I am so old. JOSH!

POW#25: Cold Bench

POW#25: Cold Bench

I like this one.  A lot, actually. And that's without ascribing any sort of commentary on the lonliness of life, or how cold lonliness is, or anything like that. I just like how it turned out. The colors are cool. The trees look neat. Yeah. I'm putting this on my fridge.

POW#26: Neon Noir Double Shot

POW#26: Neon Noir Double Shot

Couple of shots of the Edmonton, Alberta neon sign museum. Yes, I appreciate the irony of taking pictures of colourful neon signs in black and white. Shut up.

POW#27: Green Pastures

POW#27: Green Pastures

I cannot for the life of me remember where I took this photo. Somewhere out where there are both mountains and plains. And forrests. And downed trees. And sky. And clouds. Basiclaly, I took this photo on Earth and that's the best I got.

POW#28: Slow Mo Flow

POW#28: Slow Mo Flow

It's water, but over a period of time. It didn't turn out quite a well as I'd hope, but it's not too bad considering I did it hand held after hiking into the mountains with all my gear strapped to my back. Do I own a tripod? I hear you asking. No.

No I do not.

POW#29: At the Corner of New & Old

POW#29: At the Corner of New & Old

One of the most intriguing corners I encountered in Baltimore, the style of the buildings was quite unique. The whole city is unique, a strange mixture of old and new with no real line between the two. Nothing exlemplified that more than this corner. I'm also pretty sure there was a 7/11 just off camera.

POW#30: Emerald Greens

POW#30: Emerald Greens

Nature gives us some of the most spectacular colours on a daily basic.  It's like there's a colour slider, and every now and then, it's cranked up to 11 and set forth into the world. And then someone like me comes along, and we crank OUR colour slider up to 11, and it's just not something meant for this world.

POW#31: Neither Old Nor New

POW#31: Neither Old Nor New

The new towers above the old, looking down on it and the past while rising toward the sky with its steel and glass fists. Or something. I just think it looks cool. Baltimore is an interesting city, like someone took all the architectural styles of the United States, put them in a hat, then knocked that hat on the ground and a city emerged that is neither old nor new.

POW#32: Wax Museum Party

POW#32: Wax Museum Party

In celebration of the year coming to a close, I've got a bunch of photos for you. Well, actually only five, but that's a lot for one day. For one POW. It's a whole bunch of celebrities that were gracious enough to let me take their photo. Granted the process involved them having wax figures of themselves made, put in a museum, and then standing in place while I took pictures as the real celebrities were either far, far away or no longer alive. But it's the thought that counts.

POW#33: Pumpkins

POW#33: Pumpkins

Maybe when you're reading this it's fall, and the leaves have all left the trees. The temperature is starting to drop. The days are a little shorter. And the pumpkins are being prepared for Halloween. Or maybe you're reading this in January, and you're thinking there is no place that pumpkin spice cannot find you. You'd be right.

POW#34: Nine of Hearts

POW#34: Nine of Hearts

I generally don't do overly conceptual photo shoots. I prefer to capture moments, or break my back holding my camera at bizarre angles to get interesting shots of buildings. But this one time, I took a deck of cards into the forest, scattered them about, then took pictures before playing 52 card pick-up. It was not particularly easy.

POW#35: Hobbs

Comma, head out on the.

POW#37: Cold Memorial

POW#37: Cold Memorial

Do you have any idea how hard it is to take a photo of something across a busy four lane road? When it's rush hour it's damn near impossible. "Come back when it's not rush hour!" you say. "Maybe shut up I didn't think to do that," I'd answer if that were the case but it totally isn't.

POW#38: Work-It

POW#38: Work-It

Locked to a fence in the middle of the wilderness, next to a series of rapids and waterfalls that have carved a canyon into the valley floor.

Because where else would you expect to find a padlock.

POW#39: Around the World

POW#39: Around the World

Going retro today. How retro? So retro this is one of the first photos I took with the first of my camera fleet back in the day. Not photo 000000001, more like photo 000000006, but it was the first set-up. Now it's grown from a few photos to tens of thousands, and it won't stop until it's filled a hard drive the size of Venezuela.

POW#40: Type, Right?

POW#40: Type, Right?

Right? RIGHT! Oh, but seriously, I can only imagine what it would be like to make this website on a typewriter.

On the one hand, impossible...

...but on the OTHER hand...

Still impossible.

POW#46: Phone to Nowhere

POW#46: Phone to Nowhere

Can't remember exactly where this one was. Camp site near the Grasslands National Park Dark Sky Preserve. Such a weird thing to have in the middle of what feels like nowhere. Didn't think to try it to see if it still worked. Also, it's a horror movie waiting to happen.
